Topic; GOLDA: A Genetic Solution to End Male Chick Culling in the Egg Industry
Dr. Yuval Cinnamon is an embryologist specializing in poultry genetics and biotechnology. He earned his MSc and PhD at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, followed by postdoctoral fellowships there and at the National Institute for Medical Research in London. Upon returning to Israel, he led the genetic research lab at Hadassah Medical Center, focusing on rare human diseases.
Joining the Agricultural Research Organization – Volcani Institute as a principal investigator, he developed a platform for genomic transformations in chickens. His research integrates bioinformatics, biochemistry, molecular genetics, embryology, cell biology, microsurgery, and imaging, applying these tools to study early embryogenesis using chickens as a model organism. Among his inventions and developments is GOLDA chickens, a genetic solution that ensures only female chicks hatch, aiming to end the culling of male chicks in egg production.
His work is supported and commercialized by NextHen, dedicated to sustainable and humane poultry solutions. His projects aim to enhance food security, health, global sustainability, and animal welfare through advanced genetic technologies.
